Carley Hayden is a 17-year-old junior at Broomfield High School. But don’t let her age fool you, Carley has made cakes for weddings, birthdays and graduations. Her biggest inspiration comes from her brother, who passed away on Easter when he was coming home from North Dakota.
“He had a huge impact on my cooking and baking; I always valued his opinion on everything I made,” Carly told 9NEWS.
A few months before he died, Carley says her brother told her, “You are here for a reason, to make people happy with your cooking and baking.”
Carley now believes she is here to not just make people happy, but also her brother.
Beth Hill’s passion for cake decorating started in 2005 when she took the Wilton courses at a Michael’s Crafts Store where she works. She loves cake decorating because it is fun to see how the cake progresses from a blank canvas to a beautiful work of art. Beth says her cakes are special because they are delicious and great looking.
“It is usually difficult to get a beautiful cake that also tastes good. I achieve that success by making everything by hand: the cake, the icing, the fondant decorations and the design,” Beth said.
Beth credits her talent for cake decorating to her Nana, who recently passed away.
When Kris Nelson needs a mental break, she heads to the kitchen. She started decorating cakes at 12 years old, when she met a decorator who taught her how to make traditional roses and master a smooth buttercream frosting.
While Kris researches her designs, all of her creations are her own. She tries to take it to the next level each year. Everything on her cakes is edible and decorated by her.
Kris says the thing that really makes her cakes special is that they are egg-free.
“While this may not seem like a big thing to many, it is huge to me as our son (Jack) is severely allergic to eggs,” Kris said.
Tanette Schneider told 9NEWS, “The world is my canvas. I just choose to put it on a cake!”
This Colorado native is a full-time wife and mother of two boys. She began creating theme cakes after having her first son. When she learned that one of her boys had life threatening peanut and tree nut allergies, it was important for her to create cakes that weren’t just great tasting, but safe for her son.
She has never had any formal training or classes in cake baking or design, but her designs never cease to amaze. So what separates Tanette’s cakes from all the rest? She says it’s because, “they taste absolutely amazing!”
Heather Sherman is a Colorado native, who says her sculpted “art cakes” are simply pure joy.
“There is something liberating in making sculpture that is not meant to last, but it takes on new heights when the experience goes on, past ephemeral destruction, to actually EATING my yummy sculpture,” Heather said.
Heather got the idea to start designing cakes in 2008 when pregnant with her now four-year-old daughter. The doctor put her on bed rest. She suddenly found herself watching cake shows and kept telling her husband “I can do that!”
So for his birthday, she made him a “grateful” fondant cake. She was overjoyed with his reaction and says, “The rest is fun, delicious history.”
