Sarawak Eases Land Use Law To Help Cottage Industry Operators

KUCHING, May 28 (Bernama) — The Sarawak government is relaxing its land use law to help cottage industry operators obtain halal certification for their products, State Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister, Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, said here today.

She said under the State Land and Survey Department’s regularisation process, the operators will be permitted to carry out their business from their home for a period of five years.

“Through this permit, the operators can obtain licences from the local council to operate and eventually to get the halal certification from JAIS (Sarawak Islamic Religious Department),” she said when speaking at a presentation of halal certificates to nine “Kek Lapis Sarawak” entrepreneurs here.

However, at the end of the five-year period, the operators would have to continue their business in legal commercial or industrial premises.

Fatimah said the absence of a land use permit for business purposes had prevented the thousands of cottage industry operators in the state from getting halal certificates to enable them to widen their market.

Fatimah said her ministry will launch a Women Entrepreneurs Market at Medan Pelita here in June to promote entrepreneurship among women in the state.

The market will feature the state’s signature food and handicraft products, with the Sarawak Tourism Board helping to promote it to foreign tourists.

“We want to make the Women Entrepreneurs Market a must-stop place for tourists who come to Sarawak,” she added.
