There are currently eight states that have active cottage food initiatives in motion. The states are California, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, South Carolina. If you are interested in learning more about these cottage food movements, click the state. You may be directed to a petition or Facebook Fan Page that provides updated information on where the cottage food initiative is and if there is legislation being drafted by a legislator from the state House or Senate.

Home-based bakers and home food processors interested in supporting their state cottage food bill can join the movement and participate in a number of ways.

You may:

Create a petition and a social media website to get the word out about your cottage food bill

  • Contact a member of the state House of Representative from your district
  • Contact your State Senator
  • Contact your Governor
  • Work with other home-based bakers to draft a bill that will be forwarded to a member of the House or Senate who supports your cause
  • Work with a sustainable, local food organization that supports your efforts and small food entrepreneurs
  • Draft a letter of support for the cottage food bill and send it to family and friends, asking them to forward it to their state representatives. (Make sure the supporters live in the cottage food state)
  • Talk to everyone about the cottage food bill, you never know who may want to start a cottage food business.
  • Do stop supporting the bill, even if it initially dies on the House floor. Pick the bill up, dust it off and find new supporters.

  • Spread the work at local community events, using Twitter, you websites, social media site, flyers and if you’re lucky a local newspaper article to share information about this initiative.

As a supporter of your state cottage food initiative, the most damaging thing you can do is not support the bill. Making a telephone call, sending an email to a government official in support of the bill may not appear to seem like much, but it shows your government officials that you support and are serious about getting the legislation passed.
