Now more than ever, social media is taking the business world by storm. Marketing tools for businesses have never been so accessible, and with Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram and Pinterest’s swift entry into the market, business owners are marveling at the power of social media and inspired with an even bigger dream: to become the next business to make it big.
So what does it take to make this dream a reality? We believe a large part of the answer lies in harnessing the power of social media to level the playing field for your business. That is why this year, we’ve decided to team up once again with Facebook to offer Big Break for Small Business, a program designed to put small businesses on the fast track to success through the use of social media. This Year, An Even Bigger Break
Last year, I witnessed firsthand how Big Break helped transform businesses. Winners armed with a Facebook marketing game plan tailored for their business and $20,000 in cash financing, produced results that were truly inspiring. For example, 2011 winner Fat Brain Toys, a family-owned business specializing in American-made toys, was able to use its Big Break to quickly ramp up sales and increase revenue by over 150 percent from Facebook visitors alone. After seeing results such as this, along with the incredible outpouring of community support, we decided to give an even bigger break to businesses and their communities. This year, we are awarding each winner $25,000 and a one-on-one strategy session with Facebook to develop a social media plan and put it to use. Winners will also be winning for other businesses in the area because local businesses will have the chance to meet and learn from the experts at American Express OPEN and Facebook as well.
Every Small Business Wins
While only five small businesses will win the top prizes, every business that participates has something to gain. American Express Cardmembers and merchants who enter Big Break and complete our social media video series will earn $100 credit in Facebook ads, and all other Big Break entrants who complete the series will earn a $50 Facebook ad credit. Plus, everyone who enters can learn more about how to grow their business, using free educational tools from American Express OPEN and Facebook that will be made available to all participants.

Open to legal residents of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia who are of legal age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence (and at least 18) and who are owners of a for-profit small business with $10 million in annual revenue or less. The promotional coupon code for Facebook Ads of USD $50, or $100, as applicable, are valid only for purchase of advertising through Facebook’s online advertising system.
