Goodwill Industries offering professional cake decorating classes

CAKE DECORATING: Goodwill Industries is offering a seven-week course in professional cake decorating beginning Tuesday, Jan. 24. The weekly classes will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at 1005 Virginia Ave.

The hands-on course aims to teach students to prepare, decorate and complete original cake designs and understand the three stages of buttercream icing. Students can develop skills in making flowers and leaves, writing and working with icing colors along with how to stack cakes and an overview of marshmallow fondant. Those who successfully complete the course could leave with the skills necessary to launch a career in cake decorating. The course includes decorating tips and supplies for the students to keep.

This class will have an added holiday flare for Valentine’s Day designs. Students will be prepared to decorate an entire cake of their own design by the last week of class. Class is limited to 15 students.

BIZ FUNDAMENTALS, SUSTAINABLE GROWTH: Two small business workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Huntington. The workshops “Business Fundamentals” and “Sustainable Growth” are part of the West Virginia Small Business Development Center (WVSBDC) new training and business coaching program Three Step Jump Start to help small business owners receive the right information at the right time.

The workshops are:

9 a.m.-noon: “Business Fundamentals” is designed specifically for people who are thinking of starting a business, or have had a business for one year or less. The workshop provides essential information on what an entrepreneur needs to know to start a business successfully. There is a $35 fee per workshop.

5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.: “Sustainable Growth” is designed for existing and mature businesses in operation for a year or more. The workshop provides essential information for what a business owner needs to know to build, expand or refresh a business. There is a $35 fee per workshop.

Both workshops will be held in the Mountwest CTC/Latta’s Building, 348 15th Street, Room 203, Huntington.

After completing a workshop, interested entrepreneurs or business owners may schedule an appointment with WVSBDC for one-on-one coaching sessions. The WVSBDC coaches provide assistance with business plan development, financial statement preparation, cash flow analysis and other services.

HOSPITALITY: Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA will begin its new 18-week long course in Hospitality Skills Training on Monday, March 5. Class times are from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at at 1005 Virginia Ave., Huntington.

The course offers 12 hours of college credit from Mountwest Community and Technical College. Course topics include A La Carte dining service, culinary sanitation and safety, introduction to travel and tourism, professional cake decorating, and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2010. Students will intern once a week at Huntington’s Kitchen.

Students should enroll as early as possible and complete the necessary FAFSA documentation to determine eligibility for funding. At the end of the program students should be prepped to test for the Serv Safe certification along with Microsoft Office Specialist in Word 2010. The program includes job readiness training.

MEDICAL OFFICE SKILLS: Goodwill Industries will begin its next 20-week course of Medical Office Skills Training on Monday, March 5. Classes meet from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 1005 Virginia Ave.

Financial aid is available. Students should enroll as early as possible and complete the necessary FAFSA documentation to determine eligibility for funding. Deadline for registration is Monday, Feb. 20.

The course offers basic academics, math, spelling, English, proofreading, filing and the specialties of medical terminology, medical acronyms, medical billing and coding, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook 2010 (Basic), and Windows Vista. Students test for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant exam and Word 2010 Specialist for extra credentials on their resume.

Students will have the opportunity to complete an internship in the medical office setting as well as receive job readiness training. Qualifying students will receive 15 hours of college credit at Mountwest Community and Technical College (formerly Marshall Community and Technical College) upon completion.

The course offers basic academics, math, spelling, English, proofreading, filing, Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook 2010 (Basic) and Windows Vista. Financial aid is available. Students should enroll as early as possible and complete the necessary FAFSA documentation to determine eligibility for funding. Deadline for registration is Feb. 20.

Students will have the opportunity to complete an internship in a community office setting as well as receive job readiness training. Students will test for the Microsoft Word 2010 Specialist exam upon completion of program. Qualifying students will receive 12 hours of college credit at Mountwest Community and Technical College upon completion.
